When Volunteering Takes Root
More than 150 BYDSA volunteers, family members, and community members participated in a BYDSA event to improve an elementary school and contribute to the reforestation of Mérida.
A renovated school and new trees growing in the city are two distinct outcomes, united by a shared desire: to contribute to the well-being of the community.
More than 150 volunteers participated in a day of service organized by BYDSA in Mérida, Yucatán. Energizers, family members, and community members contributed their time and effort to improve the facilities of an elementary school and assist with reforestation activities.
The initiative addressed two aspects of community development. On the one hand, the work carried out at the school helped provide students and teachers with a more suitable environment for learning and socializing. On the other hand, planting trees contributed to environmental stewardship and the restoration of the city’s green spaces.
Uniting efforts
The reforestation was part of the 2026 Forestry Crusade, an initiative of the Mérida City Council that brought together citizens, businesses, and organizations under the slogan “We Plant and Care for the Future”.
Now in its thirteenth year, the program included 18 workdays during the rainy season, with the goal of planting 8,500 trees. At the end of the campaign, the municipality reported 8,754 new trees and the participation of more than 3,500 volunteers.
BYDSA’s collaboration was thus part of a broader collective effort to expand urban tree cover and raise awareness about the importance of caring for it. Planting a tree is just the first step: its growth requires monitoring and the ongoing participation of those who share the environment.
The Beginning of a National Strategy
The event in Mérida also marks the start of a national volunteer strategy that BYDSA will roll out to various branches across the country.
The goal is to promote activities tailored to the needs of each community and create new opportunities for XIGNUX employees and their families to participate in local social and environmental causes.
This vision is part of XIGNUX’s culture of social responsibility. In 2025, its energizers logged more than 14,100 volunteer engagements and dedicated more than 25,200 hours to social and environmental initiatives. During that same period, the programs of the organization and the XIGNUX Foundation directly benefited more than 109,600 people.
Beyond the improvements made and the trees planted, the event yielded a result that cannot always be measured: the coming together of people willing to work toward a common goal.
The Mérida initiative is the starting point for an effort that will seek to expand to other regions. In each new community, BYDSA will have the opportunity to rally support and demonstrate that, when energy is shared, it can also take root.
